Admiration for the electric Elliott, whether in the studio or ripping it up on tour with Quasi, has guided the proceedings here, focusing less on the fragile and tragic side of things. I'm sad enough, thank you. The first two songs are said to be sequenced as the artist intended. Since Passing Feeling was always my favorite basement cut, discovering that it was supposed to be in a featured position inspired me to similarly honor Stickman and Mr. Goodmorning lest they remain shrouded in the dust of obscurity. Tracks 16 through 20 are postscripts and the Grand Mal stuff is likely transcoded. Nanfoule added 4/23/13 (belated thanks to Nauma.) The Balladins stand alongside Bembeya Jazz as the most sophisticated of Guinea's golden age authenticité bands, among so many great ones. Their Syliphone 45s hold much of their absolute best work, stunning in its quality and variety, as the Sakhodougou - Samba - Kognö Koura sequence shows. Whether languid or swinging, you can pretty much count on quivering Latin horns as well as electric guitars that use surf, soul and psychedelia to recast ancient stories in service of a revolution. This collection is now complete, the heretofore missing b-side Vacillon a very fine guitar workout.
The Legendary Stardust Cowboy's three Mercury 45s along with some Ohio obscurities that the discerning and deceased Jones squirreled away for me long long ago at the Record Rendezvous on Prospect in downtown Cleveland. Both Johnny Angel and Tom Claire were local lounge Sinatras, the former liable to scare off even the wildest divorcée with his deranged BANG! BANG! BANG! scatting. Bluesman Travis 'Moonchild' Haddix moved to Cleveland when he got out of the U.S. Army in 1959, joining Ernest & D.L. Rocco's band that same year. Around 1988, after decades in local joints, he signed with Ichiban and began a successful career while continuing to work full time for the U.S. Postal Service to support his family. The Ohio State Penitentiary's 511 Jazz Ensemble, named for the prison's PO box, was inspired by a program the Columbus Jazz Society prepared for Ohio State's FM station called Jazz Roundtable, a brief but welcome jailhouse respite from the prevailing Country and Rock in a city surrounded by farms. Alan Zahorchak on the other hand maintains an orbit of his own. Total WHAT, Jones?! That phrase was absorbed by all who knew another departed soul, Brian Kinchy aka Brian Sands aka Brian Biddulph, who introduced me to Jones on one of my many drives from Fostoria to be guided to Cleveland's secret promo bins, troves of forgotten 45s in shops all over town and of course the bargain bins in the big box stores, where one might find Shadows Of Knight picture sleeves for 2¢ or Nico's Marble Index 3/$1.00. Total WHAT?! can be used to express disbelief ranging from enchantment to exasperation. And if any kind soul happens to have files of Ernest & D.L.'s other single Billy's Bagg/How To Keep Your Man they'd be willing to share, I'd be eternally grateful!

Here is yet another exhaustive singles compilation to satisfy a persistent personal need, this one covering two decades. In that time Little Richard's one-time chauffeur went from doo-wop to black rockabilly to dance craze novelty to classic Atlantic R&B to sixties revival blues to slick Philly disco to Ohio Players funk. Selections have been scrounged from vinyl and CD as well as numerous YouTube posts with bitrates likely to drive sensitive listeners crazy. In addition to early singles as Pretty Boy (Penniman's term of endearment) and stuff released under Covay's own name; here are covers by Little Richard, Gladys Knight, Wanda Jackson, Wilson Pickett, Gene Vincent, Joe Tex, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Otis Clay, The Staple Singers, Small Faces, Shirelles, Capitols and many others. Still missing is Landa 704 b-side Truth Of The Light. Jimi Hendrix appears on both sides of Rosemart 801 as well as Little Richard's amazing I Don't Know What You've Got (But It's Got Me) while Wilson Pickett's I'm Gonna Cry features Ohio Untouchables' Robert Ward and his watery Magnatone. It's a shame that an exhaustive anthology with pages of notes and rare photos wasn't released before Covay's death on January 30, 2015. This 2020 quarantine edition adds a couple dozen files and upgrades others to lossless. DC3 consists of stuff I wasn't crazy about although your mileage may differ. DC2b has been blessed with a better rip of Soul Stirrer as of 01/09/21.

ZU was a project of UK scenemaker Giorgio Gomelsky, who relocated to New York after helping launch the careers of the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds from his Crawdaddy Club as well as producing early sessions for John McLaughlin, Graham Bond, Alexis Koerner and Soft Machine. He was soon forcing the likes of Magma, Henry Cow and Plastic People Of The Universe on unsuspecting Americans as well as encouraging young Bill Laswell to form a band that became Material after backing Daevid Allen as ZU Band and New York Gong. The present concert took place some two months after Gomelsky's ZU Manifestival - the first progressive rock summit in the United States. Frith played several Manhattan solo shows around this time, including one at Artists Space in Soho where he harmonized with sirens passing in the street below. There was also a misguided booking at the Mudd Club, where devoted fans were refused admittance for showing up in jeans, stocking caps, long hair and pimples. I was once halfway through the door of this chic nitespot behind two downtown celebrity pals when a great arm came down like a railroad crossing gate. Quality control figured there was no way the two sharp suits had come with Travis Bickle. According to the wondrous Blegvad discography that appeared on the defunct idiot dog website, there should be a nine minute reading between Silence and Big Guns Theme, where there is an audible edit. At any rate, it's great to hear the tapers gasping in wonder as they experience their imported heroes in the flesh for the first time.
In the late 70s my rugged good looks and corruptible charm got me hired by two confirmed bachelors who ran and worked the machines of Europadisk out of three rooms in Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan. With equipment imported by another confirmed bachelor who had been a member of the Vienna Boys Choir before his family fled the Nazis in 1939, Europadisk brought German technology and precision to record stamper manufacturing in the US. Since premium prices applied, most of the work came from audiophile and specialty labels like Artists House along with a few big stars like Neil Young from the majors. One day I heard unearthly sounds from the owner's quality control listening station that were not in this case Ornette Coleman. The guilty party turned out to be a New Jersey one-stop that would make a concert recording of your school's orchestra in your auditorium and deliver you a finished fundraising LP pressed and packaged. Why such a modest operation had chosen Europadisk was unclear. Portsmouth Sinfonia is an easy reference for these field recordings, since English intellectuals struggling to control the unfamiliar instruments in their hands sound pretty much like Garden State middle school kids doing the same. Instead of Portsmouth's classical warhorses, the local repertoire mixes The Beatles and Barbra Streisand with old favorites like The Syncopated Clock (ubiquitous Afternoon Movie theme in ages past) alongside unfamiliar* tunes, perhaps band director originals, played and received with great enthusiasm. I ended up taking home around twenty of the label's one-sided lacquers that were due to be tossed and this is the stuff I saved on a cassette.
"THE SHAGGYS... Ah, the band that started it all! It was the irresistible charm of kindergarten bands like Rene & The 10 Less 5, Ric & The Skyliners, Magic Herbs and Wildcats that pushed us to share the results of our vinyl archaeology with the rest of the world. The Shaggys' first 45 was always top of the bill. Rumours of a second single gave us quite a hard time until we finally tracked it down. Like the Ragged Men record, it came out on Patria, formerly known as the R&B label. (R&B stands for whatever you like, but definitely not Rhythm and Blues.) "I'm Shy" features the immortal line, "You know it's hard to say, because I'm many shy". How can they say there's no German sense of humor?"
Q-Tip had a tough time carrying on the meld of hip-hop, jazz and elsewise that made A Tribe Called Quest such a big deal. Soon after his second solo effort, 2002's Kamaal The Abstract, was shelved by troubled Arista, he signed with equally troubled DreamWorks and recorded a whole other project called Open, featuring guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel with guest appearances by Common, D'Angelo and Andre 3000. But Open went unreleased as well, with DreamWorks shutting down for good one year later. Q-Tip fled to Universal Motown, who promised to release a reworked Open as Live At The Renaissance and then didn't. It wasn't until 2008 that rescued Open tracks appeared on Abstract Innovations and The Renaissance, with Kamaal The Abstract seeing light of day the following year. Many Secret Open tracks were scrounged from YouTube, so bitrates may disappoint. Pie is never free.

Songs for the original Gift Of Screws were recorded throughout the nineties, but when Warners heard Buckingham's mixed and mastered CD it was obvious how much more valuable these gems would be as Fleetwood Mac. So seven of the songs were quickly Stevie'd up for release on the mothership's Say You Will. Other songs from the Lindsey sessions turned up on various solo and group projects over the years, the title cut finally appearing as such in 2008, but here's the 2001 Warners CD supplemented by four outtakes and demos. As said, many of these titles are available elsewhere, but they make a wondrous song cycle as originally intended. Shadow Of The West compiles twenty soundtrack contributions, live cuts, demos and guest appearances from 1979 to 2012, as well as the clean, minimal mix of I Know I'm Not Wrong that was used on original vinyl copies of Tusk. Tracks have been gathered from vinyl, CD, torrent, message board download and YouTube, so bitrates are what they are.
Version 01.6 replaces 9 mp3s with lossless.
Version 01.5 adds 22b Kingo Mwambe.
Version 01.4 adds 01b Tremendo Punto, at long last.
Version 01.3 adds 19b Liwa Na Ngai.
Version 01.2 adds 03a Eso La Vida.
Version 01.1 Enthusiast discographer Alastair Johnston has kindly provided information and files, resulting in the addition of four tracks - 08a En Guantanamo, 13b Nkembo Na Nzambe, 18b Willy Mopaya, 23a Azongi Na Bomengo. I thank him for his generosity and infinite wisdom.
According to Johnston's invaluable Docteur Nico Discography, African Fiesta came together in 1963, featuring Nicolas Kasanda on lead, his brother Dechaud on rhythm guitar and Tabu Ley Rochereau on lead vocals, with Roger Izeidi, Kwamy Munsi, Joseph 'Mujos' Mulamba, Joseph Mwena and Depuissant, adding Faugus Izeidi, Paul Mizele, Dominique Kuntima and Jeef Mingiedi in due time. Having developed his electric guitar skills in African Jazz and Rock-a-Mambo, Nico was really sailing by this time, exploring exotic tones and textures like a Congolese Jeff Beck. Cascades of single notes alternate with thick clusters, generally plucked instead of flat-picked, all purring and growling with natural tube sustain and distortion, tremolo and reverb. Check Angola Siempre for a characteristic 'Dieu de la Guitare' solo. African Fiesta managed to record over 250 sides in just two years, with 128 Vita singles released and nary a dud among the ones I've heard. This collection comes from my own vinyl and CDs along with many many downloads from across the interwebs, with Moos @ Global Groove a prime source. I've been advised that compilation tracks are not necessarily the same takes as the original 45s, but I don't often have multiple sources to compare. 25 Vita numbers will be covered in each post, however many tracks I actually have, with downloads revised if and when additions turn up. A list of missing sides is included in the rar, and any digital contributions would be very greatly appreciated.
Version 05.5 adds 18b Sophia Yaya and upgrades 14 mp3s to lossless.
Version 05.4 adds 59b Si Te Que Moura Casa and 68a Ah! Mokolo Wana.
Version 05.3 adds 69a Tika Navanda Na Ya and 69b Oye Congo.
Version 05.2 adds 49b Yo Soy Tu Dolor and 50b Para Bailar, thanks to Moos @ Global Groove.
Version 05.1 adds 68b How Mi Closen, a phonetic translation of Buddy Holly's Words Of Love via Beatles For Sale. 'How mi closen, tummy now you feel...'
In 1965 African Fiesta split apart, with Docteur Nico carrying on as African Fiesta Sukisa while Tabu Ley Rochereau and band manager Roger Izeidi set up African Fiesta 66 and then African Fiesta National. I've divided what I have of Nico's Sukisa singles tracks into two posts. As expected, plenty of buried treasure here, although I miss the ambiance of the Vita stuff. Maybe Nico switched from tube amplifiers to transistors? These have been gathered from vinyl and CDs and downloads including YouTube, so bitrates and sound quality vary considerably. Thanks again to Alastair Johnston for his Docteur Nico Discography (new improved second edition now available), without which these humble compilations would not exist.
Information is scarce on this 1970s Ivory Coast release, but it's a beauty. Modern and ancient, familiar and remote, thankfully on vinyl nowhere near as trashed as its cover. Leader/composer Appia Morroh also released records under his own name.
Melodic Japanese roar influenced by San Diego's stupendous Drive Like Jehu. Lost Days is joined here by the Cowpers' recreation of Jehu's Bullet Train To Vegas/Hand Over Fist 45, and a 1995 debut single, which closes with the shuddering squealing Zero To 0. LP files are now lossless, singles tracks less so.
Not as weedy as Prae-Kraut Kindergarten, but getting there, even without The British Modbeats or Canadian Beadles. Tracks were originally gathered long ago from a TokenSurfer YouTube account, but thanks to soulseek most of this is now lossless. Progress indeed. Check out The Canadian Squires aka Levon & The Hawks aka The Band, long before international fame and fortune complicated everything.
Three elusive and amazing singles produced by Kelso Herston just before Spears followed him to Capitol. On her first major-label releases, Billie Jo is already resigned to the fact that men are dogs. She acts accordingly, grimly determined to make the most of whatever flashes of happiness fall her way, her voice breaking throughout these six tales of classic honky-tonk hurt.

From the darkest taverns
I rescued you
Gave you all the good things
A love so sweet and true
The dens of lust have lured you to the dark side of the town
There's just not enough of you to go around

You're a willing victim
You can't say no
Followed by sorrows everywhere you go
You always overlook me when you're fannin' all your fires
Count the hearts that you have broken curbing desires

As I walk the streets of evil
Searching for you
I'd bet my last breath you can be found
With the dirt in your favorite tavern
There's just not enough of you to go around
Minneapolis record store geeks take matters into their own hands, leaving twenty minutes of wax for the ages. I saw them at a Soho loft No Wave fest as many of that movement's pioneers were passing into history. Original post has been augmented with an early hometown show. The original Blue Cheer's only live TV appearance? The songs themselves can be heard on Live And Unreleased Vol 1, but Steve Allen's questions, comments and jests give a look in as established show biz meets the new world order, represented here by practitioners so Neanderthal that red flags went up even in Haight-Ashbury. Allen cracks plenty of jokes at the band's expense, introducing them as "the source of the annoying hum", but seems genuinely curious as he counts amp heads and speaker cabinets, asking Leigh Stephens, "And what function does the Fuzz Face, uh... fulfill?" He's laughing with these fearsome creatures, in contrast to Tonight Show guest host Bob Newhart, who seems to regard The Byrds as nothing more than incompetent clowns. Considerably more subterranean are The Holy Modal Rounders at Detroit's Chess Mate coffeehouse in 1965, freak flags flying. Featured are several self-penned masterpieces years before their official release, the crowd roaring loudest for the most deranged of them - Indian War Whoop. Clearly these were different times. Television spat out a neurotic tangle of sixties folk punk free jazz psychedelia for the next generation and those to come. Ornette Coleman coming through a Rolling Stones barrage, as Mikal Gilmore put it. Cleveland was their first booking outside New York, arranged by Tim Wright and Peter Laughner of Pere Ubu. Razor sharp from recently completed Marquee Moon sessions, Television closed out 1976 with four nights at CBGB, moving to the Palladium for a New Year's Eve gala with John Cale and the Patti Smith Group. Below you will find Tom and the Fender Jaguar he fitted with Danelectro lipstick pickups to increase the scream. New improved 2018 update replaces many of the mp3 files with lossless.
