globe unity orchestra - jahrmarkt / local fair

Here we find bassist Peter Kowald's large ensemble investigating matters of an Ivesian nature. The first of the two side-long compositions involves the deployment of 15 musicians throughout a recording studio in various configurations playing some loosely organized thematic material, freely improvising and interspersing various canonical material from Sousa to Monk. It's an all-star cast that includes Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker and Peter Brotzmann and they kick up quite a storm from the raging Machine Gun-like opening salvo through some fleet trombone multiphonics (presumably from Albert Mangelsdorff) to a subdued gasp of an ending. For the second piece, Kowald opted to literally take it to the streets and apparently invited every musician in Wuppertal (as well as a number of non-musicians) to participate. So in addition to the regular Globe Unity personnel, we have a 17-piece brass band, a Greek bouzouki quartet and Wupperspatzen - a 30-piece accordion ensemble. Chaos ensues. Performed and recorded in the town square, one has the dizzying impression of wandering through a space where the local bureaucracy made a horrible error and no one wants to budge. So you have a schmaltzy brass band butting heads with free jazzers while sidestepping the advancing accordion army and trying to ignore that raucous Greek clarinet player. Loads of fun in the best tradition of free music wackiness.

Had a badly warped LP issue years ago that I tried to "repair." No such thing with warped vinyl. Thanks for posting.

ooh yes :) thanks for this and for some of the other recent stuff (as you know i try not to download much music these days, but exceptions have to be made!)

looking forward to this... not sure why brian olewnick (in his text) assumes that trombone multiphonics must have been played by mangelsdorff; rutherford was equally known for this skill - and of course christmann is another fantastic player... to have all three of them in the one section is a conductor's wet dream! cheers, cent

hey, and i hate to sound ungrateful - but is there any chance the cover scans could be reproduced a bit bigger? it would be nice to READ those notes if poss..! (still haven't played the album... about to go off and do that now!)

Mr. Centrifuge - I've redone the back and innersleeve spreads, so hopefully you'll be able to read everything. Hope you like what you hear and see.

reservatory, thanks very much for redoing those scane, it is appreciated! (it was no big deal to download the files again... but is it maybe worth posting the scane separately, for others who grabbed the music straight away..?)

lucky, your wish, my command, etc ;-) thoughts on the album (the first piece esp.) can now be found at IYKWIS: http://tinyurl.com/ncvqae - took a bit longer than i thought (as usual!)

cheers guys

Reposted 11/16/09. I honestly have no idea where the original went...

either 3 months no dl if you originally upped it with no premium account, or someone complained and rs put it down.

personally i don't trust rs anymore - too much downtime for free users. there are other possibilites, f.e. http://lougyl.com/
up to 200mb, multi-up to 6 hosters, incl. mega, zshare, etc.

Thanks for the tip. I've been thinking about using someone other than Rapidshare. Laziness, I guess. Can you check the number of downloads on the alternatives? I have a warped need to see what my greatest hits are...

most filehosters have counters, but you have to register, which normally is for free. apart from megaupload, all stats seems quite right - i'm not sure why mul doesn't count my stuff, maybe my account is already to old, or my system just sucks (win me).

anyway - i'd recommend mediafire, since it's the most convenient for users: no waiting time, and parallel downloads. i don't know any other which have that. maximum of size is 200mb, and although it's not as fast as rs or some others, it's quite okay for me.

if you want to up files larger than 200mb, megaupload still is the best, imo. maybe check stats first, maybe with a small file which you download yourself several times.

from time to time i check what other fellow bloggers use and try alternatives. that's how i came to lougyl, via brotbeutel, a grannie in the blog-biz.

Please please pease, would it be possible to do another repost of this one? I've been having bad luck tracking it down - every time i found it posted somewhere the link would be already dead.
Also, your Dutch Improv posts, the ICP catalogue and many other things are all truly indispensable. And a very big thank you for all that!

Sorry, intempestif, that it's taken so long for me to stumble across your note. I'm not accustomed to files disappearing - this is the only post I've ever had trouble with. I've reupped as of 1/24, now at Mediafire... THANKS for your patience, folks.
