paul bley - mr. joy

There are worse-sounding jazz albums, like Curtis Counce's Exploring The Future, but that was made on the cheap for Dooto, a label known primarily for raunchy party records. This was recorded in Seattle on either side of a concert date at the University of Washington, so maybe The Sonics and Wailers had all the decent studios booked solid for their concept albums. Cover art clearly targets the underground rock market, with Bley's lover and in-house theme genie Annette Peacock featured on the inside of the trendy Unipak folder having her breasts massaged. Endless fiddling with the stereo to try to make this thing sound a little better could spoil the mood, though. It's never been reissued on CD, not even in Japan.

Speaking of Annette, did I'm the One ever make it to CD? I kept hearing that it was, but never saw it available. Thanks for the post. My cover for this album was very different, and did not have the interesting sounding gatefold.

Looking forward to hearing this. I always enjoy anything connected to Annette, sadly a lot of her own recordings going out of print quicker than they are released.

I do believe that 'I'm the one' should get an official CD release sometime early next year.

One of my favourite Bleys despite the flawed recording (i got used to it pretty quickly though). The Ballad LP is also questionable, and i love it.
Really tight playing here, The rythm section is amazing, thanks!

Reservatory --- I'm checking out your posts and remember seeing this when it first went up and laughing out loud --- very good introduction!

Not such a bad record, though ... although it does have a few of the qualities you attribute to it (but not in a BAD way! :)))

Hi. Thanks very much for this. You didn't exactly big it up but I thought I'd grab it anyway just to see Annette having her breasts massaged (her own hands surely). But the sound is ok and lo and behold there's Gary Peacock and Billy Elgart too. Interesting liner notes also. So thanks again, quite a find!
