African Fiesta @ 45tours on Vita 1963-5 Docteur Nico 01.6

Version 01.6 replaces 9 mp3s with lossless.
Version 01.5 adds 22b Kingo Mwambe.
Version 01.4 adds 01b Tremendo Punto, at long last.
Version 01.3 adds 19b Liwa Na Ngai.
Version 01.2 adds 03a Eso La Vida.
Version 01.1 Enthusiast discographer Alastair Johnston has kindly provided information and files, resulting in the addition of four tracks - 08a En Guantanamo, 13b Nkembo Na Nzambe, 18b Willy Mopaya, 23a Azongi Na Bomengo. I thank him for his generosity and infinite wisdom.
According to Johnston's invaluable Docteur Nico Discography, African Fiesta came together in 1963, featuring Nicolas Kasanda on lead, his brother Dechaud on rhythm guitar and Tabu Ley Rochereau on lead vocals, with Roger Izeidi, Kwamy Munsi, Joseph 'Mujos' Mulamba, Joseph Mwena and Depuissant, adding Faugus Izeidi, Paul Mizele, Dominique Kuntima and Jeef Mingiedi in due time. Having developed his electric guitar skills in African Jazz and Rock-a-Mambo, Nico was really sailing by this time, exploring exotic tones and textures like a Congolese Jeff Beck. Cascades of single notes alternate with thick clusters, generally plucked instead of flat-picked, all purring and growling with natural tube sustain and distortion, tremolo and reverb. Check Angola Siempre for a characteristic 'Dieu de la Guitare' solo. African Fiesta managed to record over 250 sides in just two years, with 128 Vita singles released and nary a dud among the ones I've heard. This collection comes from my own vinyl and CDs along with many many downloads from across the interwebs, with Moos @ Global Groove a prime source. I've been advised that compilation tracks are not necessarily the same takes as the original 45s, but I don't often have multiple sources to compare. 25 Vita numbers will be covered in each post, however many tracks I actually have, with downloads revised if and when additions turn up. A list of missing sides is included in the rar, and any digital contributions would be very greatly appreciated.

Version 05.5 adds 18b Sophia Yaya and upgrades 14 mp3s to lossless.
Version 05.4 adds 59b Si Te Que Moura Casa and 68a Ah! Mokolo Wana.
Version 05.3 adds 69a Tika Navanda Na Ya and 69b Oye Congo.
Version 05.2 adds 49b Yo Soy Tu Dolor and 50b Para Bailar, thanks to Moos @ Global Groove.
Version 05.1 adds 68b How Mi Closen, a phonetic translation of Buddy Holly's Words Of Love via Beatles For Sale. 'How mi closen, tummy now you feel...'
In 1965 African Fiesta split apart, with Docteur Nico carrying on as African Fiesta Sukisa while Tabu Ley Rochereau and band manager Roger Izeidi set up African Fiesta 66 and then African Fiesta National. I've divided what I have of Nico's Sukisa singles tracks into two posts. As expected, plenty of buried treasure here, although I miss the ambiance of the Vita stuff. Maybe Nico switched from tube amplifiers to transistors? These have been gathered from vinyl and CDs and downloads including YouTube, so bitrates and sound quality vary considerably. Thanks again to Alastair Johnston for his Docteur Nico Discography (new improved second edition now available), without which these humble compilations would not exist.

Information is scarce on this 1970s Ivory Coast release, but it's a beauty. Modern and ancient, familiar and remote, thankfully on vinyl nowhere near as trashed as its cover. Leader/composer Appia Morroh also released records under his own name.

Melodic Japanese roar influenced by San Diego's stupendous Drive Like Jehu. Feel you. I feel you. I feel you somewhere way down deep inside.
Love you. I love you. I love you more than words can ever hide.

Billie Jo Spears - United Artists 45s 1966-7

Three elusive and amazing singles produced by Kelso Herston just before Spears followed him to Capitol. On her first major-label releases, Billie Jo is already resigned to the fact that men are dogs. She acts accordingly, grimly determined to make the most of whatever flashes of happiness fall her way, her voice breaking throughout these six tales of classic honky-tonk hurt.

From the darkest taverns
I rescued you
Gave you all the good things
A love so sweet and true
The dens of lust have lured you to the dark side of the town
There's just not enough of you to go around

You're a willing victim
You can't say no
Followed by sorrows everywhere you go
You always overlook me when you're fannin' all your fires
Count the hearts that you have broken curbing desires

As I walk the streets of evil
Searching for you
I'd bet my last breath you can be found
With the dirt in your favorite tavern
There's just not enough of you to go around

LOSSLESS

We were cut from the same lowly pattern
Since we met, all we do is disagree
Even drink from the same pain-filled bottles
I can't love you, you're too much like me

When you cheat, I just smile and forgive you
Take you back, prop you up with sympathy
Then go out, find someone, start gettin' even
I can't love you, you're too much like me

I thought I could lead you from the barroom to the altar
Take you and show you the good side of the street
But the alike that we're a-livin' seems never ending
I can't love you, you're too much like me

You took him from me so easy
I just called to let you know I'm not mad
You don't love him no more, so tell me
How do I go about goin' bad?

Show me how to wear my makeup
With red wine, what perfume works the best
With your help, I will learn how to hold him
Learn to love all the things I detest

If that's what it takes to hold him
Surely you can correct my mistakes
If you'll wait, I'll come down to the tavern
Yes, I'll go bad, if that's what it takes

Standin' together, all the lies you ever told me
Side by side, they're all walkin' toward me
Pretty soon they'll look me in the eye
But I'll be much too busy to cry

My apologies for any misheard lyrics...

Controlled Chaos 1965-76 - Blue Cheer on Steve Allen and Other Underground Artifacts - Absolutely Live

The original Blue Cheer's only live TV appearance? The songs themselves can be heard on Live And Unreleased Vol 1, but Steve Allen's questions, comments and jests give a look in as established show biz meets the new world order, represented here by practitioners so Neanderthal that red flags went up even in Haight-Ashbury. Allen cracks plenty of jokes at the band's expense, introducing them as "the source of the annoying hum", but seems genuinely curious as he counts amp heads and speaker cabinets, asking Leigh Stephens, "And what function does the Fuzz Face, uh... fulfill?" He's laughing with these fearsome creatures, in contrast to Tonight Show guest host Bob Newhart, who seems to regard The Byrds as nothing more than incompetent clowns. Considerably more subterranean are The Holy Modal Rounders at Detroit's Chess Mate coffeehouse in 1965, freak flags flying. Featured are several self-penned masterpieces years before their official release, the crowd roaring loudest for the most deranged of them - Indian War Whoop. Clearly these were different times. Television spat out a neurotic tangle of sixties folk punk free jazz psychedelia for the next generation and those to come. Ornette Coleman coming through a Rolling Stones barrage, as Mikal Gilmore put it. Cleveland was their first booking outside New York, arranged by Tim Wright and Peter Laughner of Pere Ubu. Razor sharp from recently completed Marquee Moon sessions, Television closed out 1976 with four nights at CBGB, moving to the Palladium for a New Year's Eve gala with John Cale and the Patti Smith Group. Below you will find Tom and the Fender Jaguar he fitted with Danelectro lipstick pickups to increase the scream. New improved 2018 update replaces many of the mp3 files with lossless.

Television - Arrow

I moved to New York in the spring of 1977, following a weekend jaunt which included a trip to CBGB for a first taste of live Television. Returning to Ohio, I spent a trial night in an apartment at The Plaza in Cleveland recently vacated by an aspiring Contortion. As I surveyed the frozen parking lot next morning to make sure my Studebaker was still there, I decided that if I was going to move someplace scary and bleak, I might as well think big. But by the time I got back to Manhattan, Richard Lloyd was in rehab in preparation for Television's European debut, so almost a year passed before I got the chance for a recharge. When show day finally came I hid my Nakamichi 550 in the bottom of a crumpled bag of thrift store shirts and set out for Long Island, where the expected fireworks ensued. A couple of years later a friend with a mail order record business (another big Television fan) suggested a bootleg of the big night. Most of them went to an exporter he worked with, but I would visit Bleecker Bob in the West Village a couple of times a week to sell to this notorious cheapskate, a pitiful few copies at a time. Although it was a steady seller in his shop, he refused to tie up working capital. He always complained about the cover, too. At some point, Neil Cooper of ROIR made a play for the cassette masters, advising my partner in crime that he intended to reissue with or without our cooperation. We eventually gave in, surprising Verlaine with a modest royalty payment the next time he came around to unload dispensables from his personal collection - like the L'Intrepide Bavon Marie Marie LP I took home. Whenever our little project is mentioned, there's always a disclaimer that the original vinyl boot sounds better than the Blow Up reissue. Well, we tried. Disc mastering was done at an upper crust Hollywood establishment when Lindsey Buckingham had finally run out of coke and gone home for the day, the metal stampers came from Europadisk, the first high-end facility of its kind in the US. I also rejected test pressings from three boroughs before I found a pressing plant in outer Jersey that could handle grooves narrowed by the twenty-five minutes per side running time. It was only as I was preparing this post that I discovered The Blow Up omits Poor Circulation, Arrow's rarest gem. 09/11/18 update - the posted files are now lossless. I've also added Little Johnny Jewel from another taper, free of the crude edit just before the end of Verlaine's solo, when I had to flip the cassette.
